Having read through the various threads I am still unsure how to paint the hull.
The undercoat seems straight forward enough with something like Halfords Car Body Spray Paint – it’s the finishing I am struggling with. I have never used an airbrush in my life so I wouldn’t know where to start! I think the best option for me would be spray tins or enamels as suggested by Mike B. My question to you experienced modellers would be:
Can you buy tins of spay paint in the correct RAL colours. If so, from where? If I go the enamel route where can you buy enamel paints in the quantities required? I think you can get Humbrol paint in the correct RAL colours but they only sell very small pots of which you would need many!!

Hi Gordon. I went into my local car accessory shop last week to buy my spray can of primer paint, and had a chat to the owner when I told him what I was doing. He told me that if I supplied the correct RAL paint code, the manufacturer will make up 350 ml aerosol cans of the paint for about £20 each. He also had the etching primer, at £14 per tin, but on other models I have found the standard car primer OK at much less price!!!

The airosol cans would be perfect for doing the hull and main superstructure, but of course would not have the fine nozzle required to do the smaller area details.
I had no idea you could order cans to your own requirments, thats brilliant.

Personally I would go with the spray option. Unlike Don, my brushwork is cr..... er.... pretty ropey. Airbrushes are not that difficult, but it's not worth trying a cheapy (found that out the hard way !!) so the initial outlay is high. Not everybody gets on with them either, it has to be said. (Sorry, I guess that's not actually very helpful)

I have a long way to go but I will fully airbrush my Bismarck. That's the only way to get a realistic painting. Spray cans can be good as a base coat, but you cant do a preshading. While airbrushing you'are able to mix your base color with white, black (or whatever youo want) to get different shades to break the uniformity of the base coat. I would paint all the superstructures and deck stuff separatly, it would be a pain to mask the deck and we could break some delidate PE parts... And get some oversprays somewhere on the deck Im a bit worried about the white and black strips on the superstructures to get them perfectly in line with the hull one's. I will find something, but hard to tell without having the thing in the hands !

Well i have got my next issue this morning and its up to the painting stage. Its very vague on what it means regarding the spray paint, it says spray two coats of mid grey primer. Is that the finished colour or do we spray with something after the primer like a grey colour like it looks in this weeks issue.
Very confused lol
p.s Mark did you find out that name of the car primer you used as it says use a very fine primer. Im looking to get some of the sanding/filling done this sunday so need to get some materials.

Cheers rushzombie, i will get down to halfords for some spray. How many cans of each did it take so i can get a rough idea of how many to get without having to rush back and forth between coats.

Looks good Rushzombie, I see you have extended the hull up to deck level. I will probably go down the same route. Excellent job. yup i followed the lead of some others in the forum ,i stripped off the top layers of the hull where it steps in and made it into 1 piece from a strip of ply wood from my local model shop this did away with the need for the pieces that were sent in issue 42 ,the small bits which you had to sand to an angle,i used these at first and it looked totally crap so ripped it all off and did it my way all in 1 piece ,i cut a piece of ply 17mm x the length of the hull and the same width as the planks we used then used pieces to form the parts where the deck goes out of shape (you know what i mean lol )the only piece i used of theirs was the port holes sections then used another plank onto of that going all the way round the bow to the other side

Thanks for that Swanrail. I will have a chat with my local dealer and see if he can do the same thing.

I just use the sprays of Halfords touch up primer. I'm not anywhere near painting the hull yet tho. In any case, I won't paint it until all the fittings are in place. I learn't that lesson on the Titanic. The instructions said to paint the hull when the planking and props shafts were complete, but then we had to go and glue etched brass doors all over the hull later, so I had to rub the paint off these areas and repaint the whole flaming hull !!!! Grrrrr.......

Was recomnded to paint the entire hull with weatherproof PVA before painting it, so that it seals any small cracks or gaps and waterproofs the hull, then apply a base coat of a light matt colour then a coat of the colour you want then a second top coat and possibly a matt varnish...
What do people think?

A thinned down PVA coating might be a good idea. Don't use it neat as it will be far too thick (if that's not stating the obvious). I've never tried it myself though.

I've got my Glattfix all lined up ready to go....whenever I get my next issues to finish the hull!
Talking of Glattfix, do I paint it on BEFORE I use filler on my (very small) gaps, or after?
