Spraying tips please. When using spray cans, do you sand between coats or does the spray coat "melt" into the previous coat? If you are spraying two colour bands, how long after the first colour is applied is it safe to use masking tape on it (Tamiya) to mask off for the second band of colour? My first attempt at spraying the hull of my DANMARK was very successful but after spraying the second band, I found that the masking tape damaged the first colour.

I've got my Glattfix all lined up ready to go....whenever I get my next issues to finish the hull! Talking of Glattfix, do I paint it on BEFORE I use filler on my (very small) gaps, or after? if you use filler, apply glattfix after the filler if your gaps are really small just use glattfix as filler... after 2 or 3 coats small gaps disappear markus

If you are referring to your first coat ...your primer coat, it depends on whether you are happy with the quality of the finish. Sometimes the primer coat will expose discrepancies in the finish which becomes apparant when the first layer of paint is applied. You may see areas where you would require a little more filler...if this is the case you would give another light sand to smooth off any new filling etc. After any sanding, wipe your model with a cloth (pref. lint free or any cloth that will not leave hairs/fibres etc), moistened only with water..No other chemicals/agents. You can then apply more layers of primer until you are satisfied with the finish. The same approach would apply to your subsequent main paint coats...avoid contamination and keep your model clean.
As regards drying times...I never touch a model that has been painted for at least twenty four hours. The paint may also be too virgin to sand so it is best left for at least this amount of time. The longer taken over painting, the better...you will achieve more satisfying results.
Masking tape...I would highly recommend the Tamiya masking tapes as they are very modeller friendly, and generally will not tear back off paint that has been previously applied...again I would recommend a 24hr wait before applying masking tapes.
Hope this is some help. Cheers,Dave.

the problem of spray or not to spray was made for me because had no place to spray had to hand paint. Has not gone to badly so far still to put satin cote on yet and decide on what gray to paint on (Edited by Mark, just put photos on new lines so it looks better on the forum)

ive just contacted my local model building shop who run a model builders club and they sugested using halfords red primer for the bottom of the hull as this comes out as the correct colour ,was just wondering if anyone has any views on that and/or whether this would be true

if you are going to spray you can not get better i think it is right for British ships and a lot of modelers use it but be careful when painting the rest and use compatible paint

I've been told it isn't but not sure if that's true or not. Can anybody else throw any light on the subject ?

I'm not sure whether primer is waterproof or not ? I would not put it to the test not on a wooden hull with out giving it a coat or 2 of lacker but do it in a fine mist spry not to thick .
