Hi Mark - its the exact same problem you have highlighted in your build (week 21) where you have put a spacer piece of wood to extend the planks outwards. Except I havnt doen what you have done DOH!!!

I know im jumping the gun with this but if you look on, other peoples models/markus, one of his pictures clearly shows a water bar running along the deck approx 1 or 2 milimetres above the deck. uk instructions tell us to sand the side shell planking flush to the frame tops. how are we meant to have this water bar on our models? markus.s pic clearly shows the deck inside the shell planking

Right guys this is my problem. As you can see this is the size of the gap between the two bow planking sheets to make the 'lines' of the hull planks match up. The gap is three (3) mm. This picture: shows the ' the 'step' when I push the bow planking sheets together. As you can see its a big step approx 1.5 mm And heres a picture of my boat upto date. Sorry its not a close up, but new camera etc I need some help as my build has come to a halt at the moment. One thought I have had if I use a filler piece for the gap - will the bow parts match up with the resin part yet to be stuck on?

Hi Chill, I got your PM. Sorry for the delay in replying, but I've been on holiday for a week.
I'm going to hazard a guess that it's the main deck section is too wide, rather than the bow section too narrow. Try the deck pieces taped together and placed on the bow. It should overhang by about 2mm (give or take) each side. If it's any less then the deck is too narrow.
Another suggestion that may help. Leave the fore deck to one side for the moment and jump ahead to issues 22 & 23. When you've done the upper parts of the hull planking you can try the deck in place and it should be very obvious which parts are too wide or narrow.

It is likely it is soemthing to do with the removable deck section, when you glued the centre planks in place did you butt them tightly togther as it seems the removable deck is now 3mm too wide rather than the fordeck not being wide enough. Does the aft deck fit ok?....if it does then its an odd problem as if the removable deck is 3mm too wide where it meets the fordeck then it should be the case from end to end The correct width of the fordeck should be with both halves togther, I would work on that basis and work back from there, if you fill down the centre then it has to be too wide. Like Mark says, for now I would leave it and maybe wait until you have a better picture of how superstructure locates around the deck, you might then find yuo can reduce the width of the removable deck towards the fordeck if makes any sense. How does it look with the fordeck halves pushed together, ignoring the removable deck width, does the fordeck then not look wide enough where the hull planking comes up?

Hi SB - believe it or not the aft deck aligns perfectly with the removable deck(!) I made extra sure the planks were butted up correctly. I will double check but I am 99.9% sure that it all lines up. I will tape the pieces together and measure the gap and if it measures two (2) mm as Mark says I will lightly sand the decks down to make the lines match up as it were. I will let you know how it goes tonight. Although last night I did dry fit the resin part that sits on the bow and the bow planking plates lined up perfectly. So i think a tiny bit of sanding is in order.
But when I put the resin part on my boat the fore deck was above the resin piece. Is this correct and theres another piece to go on top of the resin piece as there is now a 'step' on the front.
I m getting abit worried that my build is going wrong
Thankyou both for the advice - my build can continue now.

I've got a step there as well. There is another wooden deck piece to go on the bow.

If you look at the german links section on the parts they have you will see that there are two wooden parts to go above the resin anchor part. From this it looks on my model as if the topmost wooden part will be ABOVE the foredeck!!! But am not going to panic but be patient and see what happens. p.s my front section of the middle removable deck was also too wide, have now sanded it level with the fordeck.

Mine is too, but I will wait till we are at the second planking stage before sanding down level, just in case it's supposed to be.

There is only one wood part (65) which is glued above the resin anchor part The second wood part you see (part 206) suplied in iss 43 is a template which is laid over part 65, it is used to form the anchor recess on part 65, look at steps 2, 3 & 4 of the German preview issue 43. Issue 43 is also where the step of the 2nd planking is sanded smooth to flow with the Bow & Stern resin parts seen in steps 11 & 13. You can stop sweating now ;D

Markus, Don or anyone else, Does this look correct? I'm puzzled that the line up from the first planking seems to project well beyond the line of the fixed deck (not yet stuck down). Test fitting the resin piece everything looks OK to me, but I want to know whether the 'V' that I've indicated is filled up to achieve the 'sharp' edge that was on the actual Bismarck. I'm also interested to know whether part 198 pushes this line out still further or will the side planks under the deck be sanded back a bit before 198 is fitted? I'd be very interested to see a close-up of Markus's build if he would oblige. Thanks, David.

David, I see what you mean and I have posted similar questions on this area before. My model looks (more or less) the same as yours.. I would also be interested to hear or see some of Markus's build.

My model looks the same too thank goodness. I found that the centre deck was a bit wide and sanded it back to match the fore and aft decks. I did not fit a spacer between my fore deck sections as it didnt seem to need one. Hopefully all will be ok when it comes to the second layer of decking.

@ david & gordon: looks good to me !!
and don't worry, this area is double planked as per instructions.
so there's plenty of planking thickness to create a sharp edge.
will look for a detail pic tomorrow evening when 'im home again
cheers

Hi David, my model is like yours, with the triangular bit missing!!! Just checked with the Anatomy of .... and it should be as you have drawn. I am assuming that this problem is corrected in a later issue, but we need Markus to confirm this for us, be interesting to see what his looks like now primed.
